Musculoskeletal Disorders Preventing

In Ontario, the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) includes provisions to prevent Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs) in the workplace. Employers are required to take several steps to reduce the risk of MSDs, which are injuries or disorders affecting the movement of the human body or the musculoskeletal system.

Key Points:

Ergonomics

Employers must ensure that workstations and tasks are designed to fit the worker, reducing strain and overexertion. Equipment Maintenance: Keeping equipment in good condition to prevent injuries.

Training and Supervision

Providing information, instruction, and supervision to workers about MSD risks and prevention.

Hazard Communication:

Clearly communicating any hazards related to MSDs in the workplace

Precautionary Measures

Taking every reasonable precaution to protect workers from MSDs

Inspections

Conducting regular inspections to identify and mitigate MSD risks, especially if the workplace has more than five workers.

These measures are part of a broader effort to ensure a safe and healthy work environment, minimizing the risk of injuries related to repetitive strain, awkward postures, and heavy lifting.
