Bear safety
Here are some key procedures to follow:
Waste Management
Ensure all food waste and packaging are disposed of in bear-proof containers. Avoid leaving any attractants like food or garbage accessible to bears.
Awareness and Training
Workers should receive bear awareness training, which includes understanding bear behavior, recognizing signs of bears (like tracks or scat), and knowing how to react during an encounter.
Making Noise
Make noise to alert bears of your presence, especially when working in dense vegetation or near water sources where bears might be present1.
Site Management
Conduct regular wildlife risk assessments and ensure that fencing and lighting are adequate to deter bears. Designate safe areas and escape routes for workers in case a bear enters the site.
Bear Encounters
If a bear is sighted: Do not approach the bear. Ensure the bear has an unobstructed escape route. Stay calm and avoid sudden movements. Report the sighting to your supervisor and follow the site’s bear management plan.
Bear Monitors
On sites with a high likelihood of bear encounters, having a dedicated bear monitor can be beneficial. This person is trained to use bear deterrents and monitor for bear activity. By following these procedures, construction sites can help ensure the safety of both workers and bears.
